“St Antoine” an original oil on canvas by the highly collected French Postwar & Contemporary master, Georges Ferrato. Handwritten, titled, and dated by the artist's own hand on the reverse side in June 1988.
A masterful study in organic texture, the composition employs a dramatic, heavy impasto and palette-knife technique. Thick, sculptural ribbons of rich terracotta, crimson, and burnt orange are layered over a clean cream base. Setting this piece apart are the bold, gestural sweeps of earth-brown and ochre, carved into with linear, white-scratched highlights that give the artwork an incredible primitive, architectural energy. Subtle undertones of vibrant turquoise peek through the heavy medium, adding brilliant micro-bursts of color.
The artwork bears the artist's iconic monogram signature rendered in a contrasting deep teal paint in the lower-right corner. It comes perfectly housed in a pristine, contemporary blonde wood floating gallery frame with a sleek black inner lip.
Ferrato’s works from this period are represented in major public French collections, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Dunkerque and the Musée Picasso d’Antibes.
