A Magnificent Pair of Vintage Medici-Style Pottery Lions
This pair are a superb representation of the Medici Lion tradition. Modelled in a walking, striding pose, each lion is powerful and alert, with muscles clearly defined. The central element of their form is a smooth sphere—a globe or ball—which they rest one powerful forepaw upon, a classic symbol of world dominion. They stand on integrated, rectangular pottery bases with an intricate, cross-hatched, lattice-patterned border.
The pottery is expertly hand-painted in a warm, textured glaze of golden-brown and tawny-ochre tones, perfectly capturing the texture of a lion’s coat. This is contrasted beautifully with their deep, voluminous manes, which are a glossy, textured, near-black glaze that adds deep shadow and drama. Each face is individually detailed, giving the lions unique, intense expressions that bring them to life.
