“Figure Scene by The Water” by Birger Ljungquist (Swedish, 1894–1965)

An evocative mixed media work by Swedish artist Birger Ljungquist. Birger Ljungquist studied at Althin's School of Painting and the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, making his debut alongside the group "De tretton" (The Thirteen) at Liljevalchs Art Gallery in 1928. Working in a style of lyrical realism, he painted nude peasant girls in oil or pastel, employing a light, blonde color palette. He also painted motifs inspired by folk songs in shimmering watercolors.Ljungquist's art is represented at the Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as at the Gothenburg Museum of Art, Kalmar Art Museum, Norrköping Art Museum, Borås Art Museum, Bergen Museum, and Linköping Museum.
